  • Sarah Owens, chair of Graduate Communications Design, joined the interview spotlight series on @prattgradcomd to share her thoughts on the impact of design and how to find inspiration: “I very much recommend looking for situations and experiences that will allow you a change in perspective, alongside granting yourself the time necessary to reflect on and develop your own creative viewpoint.”

  • Pratt’s Latinx community members are being highlighted on @PrattInstitute for National Hispanic Heritage Month, including Estefania Velez Rodriguez, visiting assistant professor of fine arts, who creates dreamlike large-scale paintings based on her photography of nature and architecture in Puerto Rico. The Brooklyn Rail recently reviewed Velez Rodriguez’s exhibition at Praxis Gallery, describing how with “fluorescent oil and spray paint, the pattern-rich paintings strip away the surface of the natural world to reveal the inner life of nature and of the artist.”

  • Made in NYC Week 2021 kicks off today! The annual celebration runs through October 9 and is organized by Made in NYC, an initiative of the Pratt Center for Community Development. It celebrates NYC’s vibrant manufacturing and maker community with this year’s event featuring pop-up markets and digital dialogues spotlighting locally made products and the stories of the people who make them.   • Salman Toor, MFA Painting ’09, is one of the artists featured in the Frick’s new Living Histories: Queer Views and Old Masters project that pairs new works in conversation with Old Master paintings. As The Art Newspaper reported, Toor’s “Museum Boys” will be installed alongside Johannes Vermeer’s “Mistress and Maid” and “Officer and Laughing Girl” through January 2022.

  • The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) launched the inaugural issue of its journal, iteratio /i.te’ra:.ti.o/. The publication can be explored online, with stories highlighting creative approaches to the scholarship of teaching and learning at Pratt.

  • Made in NYC, an initiative of the Pratt Center for Community Development, is spotlighting Latinx-owned businesses on social media and their website for Hispanic Heritage Month. A recent feature highlighted the work of Catalina Parra, MS Urban Environmental Systems Management ’13, who through her Base Ceramics studio creates mugs, vases, and planters that explore form, color, materiality, and a fusion of aesthetics and functionality.
