Textiles touch our skin, line our homes, and carry our belongings. But what are they, really? How does the textile industry impact the earth system? How can it become sustainable? In this course, we will investigate textiles. You will perform ASTM standard tests in the laboratory to quantify the properties of yarns, weaves, and finishes. You will learn the chemical and physical properties of natural, synthetic, and semi-synthetic fibers, as well as the natural history of their feedstocks. Using the framework of life cycle analysis, we will assess the environmental impacts associated with these properties and natural histories. This course will develop your precision in handling and discussing textiles.
