HMS-233P Postwar Italian Film: Gender & Politics

3 Credits

Through the analysis of both iconic classic Italian films, and contemporary Italian films, we will examine the themes and cultural conflicts that arose during the transformation of Italian society after the cataclysms of fascism and the Second World War. Artistic and intellectual movements ranging from Neorealism to Magic Realism will inform our analyses of how Italian cinema addresses topics such as gender dynamics, class, power, cultural dislocation and migration. We will also touch upon Italian cinema’s transnational influence, such as that on France’s New Wave cinema, or on directors such as Martin Scorsese.
