The Marine Biome is a source of inspiration and wonder. Largely unexplored and central to emerging solutions in climate resilience and sustainability, the ocean provides a lens for understanding the processes and connections that shape our planet and its future. This course examines freshwater watersheds, estuarine, and marine environments by exploring hydrologic, climatic, biological, and human processes. Using the local estuary as a case study, students investigate weather phenomena, water quality, biodiversity, environmental policy, and science communication through laboratory activities, fieldwork, and project-based research. By connecting local observations to global patterns, students gain a deeper appreciation for the ocean as a dynamic and interconnected Earth system. Throughout the course, students develop the scientific knowledge, analytical skills, and creative approaches needed to investigate marine systems, evaluate contemporary environmental challenges, and apply problem-solving strategies to address issues affecting marine and coastal environments.
