Working with simple analog (film) photography opens new avenues in image making, producing fascinating captures that are both beautiful and unexpected. DIY photography is both challenging and highly rewarding, leading to a more carefully considered creative approach. Many of the needed materials are likely around your house or can be purchased locally. Common items can often be repurposed to become new and unusual cameras. In this first part of the workshop, participants will be guided through building their own fully functional 35mm pinhole camera and will then use them to take black and white photos (Basic parts provided by mail). In the second part, photographers will learn how to develop their film at home, using a non-toxic coffee-based film developer. The third part will explore strategies for bringing your film captures into the digital domain for online use and inkjet printing. 2.5 hours per week, three weekend afternoons. $10 materials fee. Students will need to obtain an Exacto knife, cutting pad, ¼” black masking tape, developing tank and reel (approx. $30), miscellaneous items.
