    9:00 am – 11:50 am

    North Hall, 112

The purpose of this class is look at contemporary Hot Spots, places in the world that are drawing global attention. What makes a Hot Spot, and what do we need to know in order to understand them? In addition to learning to critically evaluate the dynamics of critical and newsworthy events, students will gain skills in exploring the social, political, geographic, economic and cultural dynamics of the past. Historical narratives that guide our attention to some parts of the world (and not others) do not only appear in textbooks, but in literature, music, feature films, streaming series, documentaries and social media. Together, the class will explore how conflicting stories about the past infuse and shape local, regional and global perceptions.
