Arch 152 L, History and Theory of Architecture 2, is the second lecture course in a required four-semester sequence of history-theory courses for Architecture majors. Lectures examine the global history of architecture from roughly 1300 CE through the Civil War. This course must be taken with ARCH 152 D, a discussion section, which follows each lecture. Lectures present major global architectural projects produced prior to the mid-19th century. We examine how building techniques, architectural intentions, use of materials, and the development of architectural styles (a term we use critically) are the result of migration, settlement, colonization and trade, and also how they relate to techno-scientific, socio-cultural, artistic, economic, material, and geophysical developments in world history. We explore the ethics of architectural work, as well as the various media of architecture: from facades and plans of buildings, to written and printed treatises and debates between architects.
