The class explores the histories of Dada and Surrealism, two avant-garde movements that crossed borders between continents and media, from a transnational, global perspective and looks at their enduring legacy in contemporary art and visual culture. It examines the artistic practices and theories, and the socio-political and cultural contexts of the two movements from the 1910s to the 1950s, and investigates a broad range of artworks, events, and texts, including photography and film, by artists such as Hannah Höch, Kurt Schwitters, Man Ray, Marcel Duchamp, Francis Picabia, André Breton, Dora Maar, Matta, Joan Miró, Wilfredo Lam, and many others.
