While the Cold War is commonly remembered as an ideological conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union, this course focuses on the Cold War as a period of U.S. imperial expansion in Asia and the Pacific, and its domestic ramifications for U.S. culture and politics. Students will explore the differences in how the Cold War is remembered and represented within and without the United States, with a focus on Asian and Pacific Islander experiences and memories of U.S. Cold War militarism. They will survey Asian diasporic and Pacific Islander art, poetry, and culture that challenges mainstream representations of the Cold War and interrogates war, memory, settler colonialism, and militourism.
