The Caribbean played a crucial role in the rise of the modern world and design played no small part. This course explores how, from 1492 to the present, urban design, architecture, interiors, graphic design and more was key in constructing, contesting and negotiating the region and its societies, with notable global implications. Grounded in Caribbean theory and organized around a number of themes, such as slavery, environmental catastrophe, tourism and utopias, this course centers the historical contexts of these designs and their contemporary repercussions.
