HAD-629 Antique Chic: Traditions in Ancient Mediterranean Design

3 Credits

The visual and material production of the broader ancient Mediterranean world, focused on Ancient Greece and Rome, but also including ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia and Europe, from ca. 4500 BCE to 550 CE, is vast and diverse. Rather than "Art," this course focuses on interior design, decoration, and objects of daily life made for public, religious and domestic spaces, fashion and textiles, and visual communication, whether unique objects or large scale production, with an interpretative focus on cross-cultural and cross-media connections and borrowings. The course includes student designed discussions, an independent research project, and group museum visits.
