Pratt has transitioned from Single Stream Solid Waste Mgmt. to Single Stream Recycling, (co-mingled), Solid Waste Mgmt. This has been prompted by NYC Regulations.
We need your help with on campus sorting so that we can maintain our previous high recycling/reuse percentages which were approximately 90%.
Please read the information below and follow the signs on the trash cans.

GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR SOLID WASTE OPERATIONS
Pratt Institute has changed its solid waste management systems to improve sustainability and comply with local regulations. Listed below is a summary of the procedures.
Single Stream Recycling – 2 Bins – On-campus Sorting Required
The system is referred to as ‘single stream recycling.’ As such, all waste is sorted into the following categories, with appropriate signage and bag colors.
- Single stream recycling – plastic, glass, metal, paper, cardboard – clear bags
- Garbage, trash – all other material except electronic waste or paint based – black bags
- Organic waste – material from food prep and post dining – currently trash – black bags; we will be evaluating cafeteria and student dining in the next year
- Yard Waste – grass clippings, tree branches etc. – small amounts – black bags
Larger amounts such as leaves and major clippings – separate container - Electronic waste – place on Steuben East dock or call Facilities for pick up.
RESIDENCE HALL SPECIFIC GUIDELINES
215 WRH – Students separate in their rooms
- plastic, glass, metal, paper, cardboard – blue bin – clear bags
- all trash – separate bag – black
Students place bags in chutes:
- 1 chute for Recycling – plastic, glass, metal, paper, cardboard – clear bags
- 1 chute for garbage – black bags
Cct, Stabile, Elj, Pantas – Students separate in their rooms
- plastic, glass, metal, paper, cardboard – blue bins – clear bags
- all other – trash – black bag
Students bring bags to dumpsters and place in correct dumpster
- recycling to recycling dumpster
- trash/garbage to trash dumpster
100 Grand – Students separate in their rooms
- plastic, glass, metal, paper, cardboard – blue bins – clear bags
- all other – trash – black bag
Students bring bags to large containers and place in correct container:
- recycling to recycling dumpster
- trash/garbage to trash dumpster

- Facilities removes Recycling and Trash to the correct large container/dumpster
Common Areas – Galleries, Corridors, etc.
Faculty, staff, students and guests place:
- recyclables in ‘recycle’ containers – clear bags
- Trash in trash/garbage containers – black bags
Facilities removes recycle and trash and brings to correct large container/dumpster
CAFETERIAS AND SATELLITE FOOD AREAS
Cafeteria and Pizza Gallery
Faculty, staff, students and guests place:
- recyclables in ‘recycle’ containers – clear bags
- Trash in trash/garbage containers – all food and contaminated ware – black bags
AVI removes recycle and trash and brings to correct large container/dumpster
Grounds
Faculty, staff, students and guests place:
