Substantial Completion for Boiler Scope – Dec 2023
Plaza Landscape Completion – Spring 2024
Project Team: Burns; Jacobs Wyper; SCAPE; JRM Construction
The boiler plant project is a complete gut renovation upgrading the existing centralized steam generating and distribution system to new high efficiency boilers. Decommissioning the two 1940’s boilers and one defunct/out of service boiler. This work will install 2 new high pressure steam boilers that can be converted to low pressure steam in the future when the outer buildings are removed from campus steam and converted to clean energy for heating and cooling. The plaza had severe structural damage and corrosion to the existing columns and beams and was considered unsafe. The smoke stack and facade require structural repairs and repointing – the stack was restored to its original height. In addition to a new steam plant, the project features a new plaza including landscaping and seating.

Construction – Summer 2023
Project Team: Napach Architecture; L+M Construction
Continued effort to refresh each floor (approx 17,000 sf per floor / 70,000 sf) – total of 16 floors (there is a floor 17 but no 13th floor). Also renovating one line of bathrooms (7 and 8 line). Next summer (2024) 2 floors 12 + 14 leaving floors 15,16,17 unrenovated.

The CME complex is a historic structure with very little renovation over the years. It ranks high on Pratt’s energy masterplan and suffers from decades of deferred maintenance. The complex houses all of Fine Arts shops (printmaking; ceramics/kilns; jewelry; metal /welding shop; and wood shop, Fine Arts drawing studios, and the Fine Arts senior sculpture studios. In addition to Fine Arts, the complex also houses the Schafler Gallery; IT computer and production labs; the Sustainability Center; General Use Classrooms; the Materials Lab and plaster studios for the School of Design. The complex needs an electrical upgrade and new mechanical systems to take the building off campus steam and remove the inefficient window AC units. The windows were recently replaced in the Chemistry wing – replacement of the existing single pane windows in Machinery + Engineering will begin this summer. Preplanning began in the Spring for “restacking” the Engineering, Machinery, and Chemistry (EMC) complex to update the Undergraduate Fine Arts (UG Fine Arts). This effort will focus on the following areas:
Confirm and evaluate the use of the EMC complex to support UG Fine Arts Update the space utilization study and program statement for UG Fine Arts and IT departments, both of which will be located in the facility
Evaluate the functionality of general use classroom space in the EMC complex Develop design concept(s) to accommodate UG Fine Arts in the EMC complex
