A pattern is something that repeats, like the beat of a drum, the stripes on a zebra, the phases of the moon, or the clauses of a sentence. This course introduces mathematical methods for composing and analyzing patterns in 1D, 2D, and 3D figures. Formal problems arise naturally in designing patterns, and our aim will be to illustrate, unpack, and solve such problems through visual, logical, and quantitative reasoning. Students can expect class to alternate between workshop-style instruction in pattern analysis and problem-solving sessions. Sources of patterns will range from number theory, geometry, and topology to art, design. and nature.
