144 West 14th Street, Room 407

Traditionally, building design and facilities management relied on two-dimensional drawings as a starting point for a project. With the introduction of the 3-D model into the process, all aspects of the design process have changed. The integration of Building Information Modeling (BIM) goes beyond the planning and design phase of the project, and extends throughout the entire building life cycle—from supporting processes including cost management, construction management, project management all the way through facility operation.

Pratt Manhattan’s BIM Lab offers 10 high-end Dell workstations to support a variety of 3-D modeling and project planning software packages including AutoCAD suite, Revit suite, Navisworks suite, Primavera Project Planner, and Microsoft Project. Each station has a dual monitor setup so students can view the model as well as a project schedule simultaneously to make direct links between them, a 3-D space navigator mouse which works with all supported software to make navigating the model more intuitive, four 42 inch flat panel models mirroring the teacher’s computer to allow viewing of demonstrations much more intimate, as well as a high definition projector for more robust presentations. The BIM Lab also offers drafting tables, space for traditional model building, and wide-format printing on 42-inch bond paper. The careful design choices made in creating the BIM Lab have allowed students to learn and apply the ideas of collaboration and access through simulation and visualization, which is at the center of a BIM approach to management.
