The New York Times Quotes Graduate Center for Planning and the Environment Chair

John Shapiro, chair of the Graduate Center for Planning and the Environment, was quoted in a September 17 New York Times article on the city's redevelopment plans for a vacant area in New York's Lower East Side long known as Seward Park. The site was a point of contention between community groups and politicians for decades, and Shapiro was credited in the article with conducting private sessions with all sides to ensure that a consensus was reached for how to redevelop the space. The Bloomberg administration plans to erect a complex at the location that would include retail markets, restaurants, office space, a movie theater, parks, an Andy Warhol Museum, and 1,000 apartments, half of which would be for low-, moderate-, and middle-income families.
