Alec Appelbaum, a visiting assistant professor in Pratt Programs for Sustainable Planning and Development (PSPD), recently authored an Op-Ed in The New York Times about technology and urban life. In response to the “Smarter Cities” movement to equip cities with complex technology, Appelbaum explores how a low-tech email-based approach to facilitating dialogue is readily at hand and may be more effective. He cites the success of this simple approach in the Seward Park Urban Renewal Area project, which was facilitated by PSPD Chair John Shapiro. The piece was accompanied by an illustration by Scott Menchin, an adjunct instructor in Graduate Communications Design.
