Pratt’s MFA in Writing program, which launched in fall 2014, is unique in its mission to foster writing practices that are culturally and politically informed. The premise of the program is that writing can be transformative, and outside engagement—in which writing practices extend beyond the page—is central to the vision.
Jive Poetic (M.F.A. Writing ’17) engages the transformational power of writing off the page through the poems that he performs for a wide range of audiences in the United States and abroad, and the poetry workshops he holds in New York City public schools, community centers, and other settings.
In this short video, Poetic gives a powerful performance of his poem, “Go Home,” which evokes the neighborhood of his childhood and the important rules he learned growing up there, including Rule #1: Always know when it is time to go home.
