Pratt Institute’s English and Humanities Department has been renamed the Humanities and Media Studies Department, effective July 1, 2009. The department, which is one of three academic departments within the Institute’s School of Liberal Arts and Sciences, is located on Pratt’s Brooklyn campus.
The Humanities and Media Studies Department encompasses a wide range of disciplines, including creative writing, media studies, English, journalism, comparative literature, composition, theater, performance and performance studies, foreign languages, speech and communication, and music.
The mission of the department is to recognize and foster the relationship between visual and written texts; to instill within students critical thinking, reading, and writing skills that will inspire them in their professional lives for intellectual and creative growth; and to promote understanding and appreciation for the diverse cultures within the U.S. and throughout the world.
“‘Humanities’ continues to represent the breadth of our offerings as an umbrella term, while ‘Media Studies’ represents a long-standing, leading focus and the teaching area of many of our faculty,” said Ira Livingston, chair of the Humanities and Media Studies Department. Livingston also added that he hopes the new department will soon be referred to as HMS.
