Pratt Honors Indigenous Peoples’ Day – Listening Circle
October 12, 2023 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM
Center for Equity and Inclusion (CEI) - Main Building 004
Pratt Institute is proud to announce its inaugural celebration of Indigenous Peoples’ Day on October 12th, dedicated to honoring Indigenous peoples native to the Americas. This significant milestone is marked by a series of events that reflect our commitment to recognizing and celebrating Indigenous cultures.
The Pratt Institute Native Indigenous Working Group (NIWG) is a student, staff, and faculty-led group sponsored by the Office of Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI). The group seeks to provide listening circles that, in turn, help advise the campus community on vital issues of land sovereignty and the furtherance of individual and collective Native and Indigenous identities by enacting a calendar of Native and Indigenous ceremonial practices and awareness to strengthen the relationship between the institution, and the Native and Indigenous communities that are represented throughout our campus.
We invite all members of the Pratt community to join us in these thought-provoking and celebratory events as we honor Indigenous Peoples’ Day and embark on a path of greater understanding and appreciation of Indigenous cultures.
This Listening Circle marks the group’s commendable efforts in crafting the Pratt Institute Living Land Acknowledgment and establishing a partnership with the Lenape Center. The session will delve into specific ways to comprehend the nuances of the Living Land Acknowledgment, addressing both implicit and explicit wrongs. Additionally, there will be discussions on the potential for rematriation and land sovereignty in collaboration with the Lenape Center. Food will be provided.
