How can we teach Rome to Pratt architecture students who are coming from all parts of the world and most likely traveling to Italy for the first time? How can we teach architecture in Rome knowing the long and rich history of architectural learning – in which Italy has played a fundamental role since the Grand Tour tradition – yet understanding how this history has served the construction of intellectual Eurocentrism? “Laboratorio Roma” will speak of a work in progress, one that questions a unified understanding of Rome by opening it up to the present complexity and richness of its Mediterranean context. The Pratt Program in Rome is conceived as a collective, inclusive, pedagogical and research project whose scope is to provide a vital space of enquiry, exchange and enrichment for students, alumni, faculty, scholars and friends of the Program.
