Sound + Synaesthetics

Korean-American sound artist, vocalist and composer Bora Yoon will discuss her work at the intersection of music, technology, time-based art, and visual performance.  This lecture will examine collaborations with data artist R. Luke DuBois (NYU, bitForms gallery), theatrical and intermedia design, multi-format presentation of graphic album Sunken Cathedral, and how music and sound interact across various digital mediums, architectural spaces, and the principles of sound and synesthesia through its materiality, and resonant realms in visual art, digital media, and physical architectural spaces.  This lecture will refract and illuminate the idea of music and sound as means of multimedia storytelling — exploring the nature of sound, space, geography, associative memory, metaphoric design, nested structures, music in relation to architecture, visual interaction, associations and sensory triggers, and the medium of layered realities that sound affords artists, to manipulate time, space, place, and narrative.

Bora Yoon is an award-winning, Korean-American composer, vocalist, and sound artist who creates immersive audiovisual soundscapes using digital devices, voice, found objects and instruments from a variety of cultures and historical centuries — to create a unique language of storytelling with music, space, and sound.
