Book Launch – As Told: Brooklyn Histories

November 7, 2019 12:30 PM – 2:00 PM

As Told is an oral histories project aimed at recording and publishing the stories of senior citizens in Brooklyn, NY.

Join us for the launch of the book As Told: Brooklyn Histories, a compilation of stories told by Brooklyn senior citizens—edited by Maria Baker (MFA Writing ’17, Pratt PIC faculty), Luke Degnan (MFA Writing ’16, Pratt PIC faculty), and Aarushi Agni (MFA Writing ’19) and featuring photographs by Samuel Herrera (BFA Photography ’20).

In light of social and economic transformations in the Fort Greene and Clinton Hill neighborhoods, it is necessary to document the history of our community’s oldest residents, to better understand the humanity and experiences of those who came before us, by gaining knowledge of their daily lives and their journeys.

This project is funded by a Humanities New York Action Grant with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Additional support provided by a Taconic Fellowship from the Pratt Center for Community Development and a Pratt Research Seed Grant from Pratt Institute. Our community partner is the Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership, whose work with local seniors is supported by a grant from the Brooklyn Community Foundation’s Elders Fund.
