A critical study of the major movements and paradigms of contemporary global art-appropriation, institutional critique, social practice and performance, site-specificity, etc. Special attention will be given to crucial figures (e.g., John Akomfrah, Andrea Fraser, Hito Steyerl, Ai Weiwei, Fred Wilson) and key topics (e.g., feminist theory, "postmodernism", political controversies and activism, climate change, digital connectivity / web 2.0, and art markets).
