TAX INFORMATION FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

International students in the United States have important tax filing obligations each year with the national authority for taxes, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

If you were physically present in the U.S. anytime between January 1 and December 31, you are required to file the IRS Form 8843 by the following April 15. You must file this form even if you did not earn any income.

If you earned any taxable U.S. source income, you likely need to file a federal tax return with the IRS. Depending on your individual circumstances, you may also need to file a state tax return.

OIA has partnered with a company called Sprintax to provide you with easy-to-use tax preparation software. You will receive a discount code on the cost of the filing software.

In January of each year, OIA emails current Pratt students and alumni on OPT with tax information and instructions. Make sure to read your email and look out for that message.

Please note that OIA is not qualified or allowed to provide individual tax advice and we encourage you to utilize Sprintax’s service. It is up to you whether you use Sprintax, but you should file your taxes for the previous tax year by April 15.
