Biography

Frederick Biehle represents the third generation of a northern Ohio family dedicated to the fine and decorative arts. In 1986 he was awarded the Prix de Rome Fellowship in Architecture allowing him to live and study in Italy for two years. He has traveled extensively in the Mediterranean region researching and documenting the architecture of antiquity. His drawings and architectural works have been exhibited and published widely. He founded his own firm in partnership with Erika Hinrichs in 1997. He currently serves as coordinator of the Rome Program.

Coordinator, Pratt Institute Rome Program 1997- present
Responsibility for the semester budget of $200,000. Oversaw an enrollment increase from 15 to 42 students. Promoted to the Institute the necessity of sending Brooklyn faculty to Rome. Provided Curriculum Development for the Design Studio, the Drawing course and the Urban Studies course. Development of a Pre-Requisite Rome Course: Form as Content: The Legacy of Roman Urban Architecture. Editor, Rome / In Process, a Publication on the Program from 1997-2003. Editor of forthcoming Publication on the Program from 2005-2010.

Co-author with Dr. Kathryn Gleason of a research based design studio, Architecture into Landscape: Archaeology and Invention, offered in conjunction with the active excavations of the Promontory Palace of Herod the Great, sponsored by the Graduate School of Fine Arts, the University Museum of the University of Pennsylvania, and the Kaplan Fund, that examined the link between the process of archeological investigation and speculative making.
