The gender-bending coupling of Cindy Crawford and k.d. lang was one of the most controversial covers Churchward produced during his tenure as design director for Vanity Fair. Other celebrated covers include the image of the pregnant actress Demi Moore, which was named the second greatest magazine cover of the last 40 years by the American Society of Magazine Editors in 2005. Vanity Fair won the National Magazine Award for Design in 1992. In 1994, Churchward became design director of Vogue.
