One of the leading women designers in decorative arts in the late nineteenth century, Morse entered the growing field of book-cover design after studying glasswork with the sculptor John La Farge and working in Louis C. Tiffany’s stained glass studio. This cover, created at the height of her career, shows the artist’s skillful use of gold embellishment and sinuous line to create an elegant arrangement of art and lettering.
