Pope.L crawled down numerous blocks of New York City’s Broadway for his extreme performance piece, which took place over a number of years and was recorded on video, along with the responses of onlookers. New York Times art critic Roberta Smith wrote that Pope.L’s performance showed him to be “an emasculated superhero, a downtrodden black man, and a dedicated penitent, spurred by faith.”
