Joan Semmel (Painting, Alumna)

Sunlight (1978), oil on canvas

Included in the seminal “WACK! Art and the Feminist Revolution” exhibition, Sunlight is part of the artist’s ongoing exploration of the use of complex perspective to depict looking down at her own body. Semmel’s sexually frank paintings, often heightened by the use of expressionist color, are widely recognized as important contributions to feminist art history.
