Nancy Grossman (Fine Arts, Alumna)
Suet (1977-1980), wood, leather, and mixed media
New Orleans Museum of Art: Gift of Sydney and Walda Besthoff, 2010.44.A,.B
Suet is one of the 75 life-sized, leather encased heads that Grossman produced for nearly two decades and which the artist refers to as self-portraits. Their provocative materiality also brings forward the artist’s concerns with power, violence, and gender, central themes of Grossman’s diverse oeuvre of sculpture, collage, assemblage, painting, and drawing.
