Roman Verostko (Fine Arts, Alumnus)

Manchester Illuminated Universal Turing Machine, #1 (1988) multi-pen plotter drawing with gold leaf

(c) Victoria and Albert Museum, London

The first in a series of drawings Verostko created to celebrate the birth of the modern computer, the left side is a computer-generated image based on the artist’s algorithmic programming and the right reproduces the binary code used to build the first electronic computer in 1948. Since the 1980s, Verostko has been among the vanguard of artists who are advancing the development of algorithmic computer art. He was awarded the SIGGRAPH Distinguished Artist Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2009.
