Paine created Maelstrom, a branching sculpture made of 10,000 pieces of stainless steel, for The Metropolitan Museum of Art's Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Roof Garden in 2009. The New York Times art critic Ken Johnson called Paine "an empiricist philosopher creating visually fantastic thought-experiments that expand our assumptions about the nature of reality and the reality of nature."
