A conceptual artist known for using simple materials to explore complex ideas, Hodges invited delegates from the United Nations to handwrite the words “don’t be afraid” in their own language. The resulting billboard, with its multivalent message, became a “global chorus,” and was installed in five cities in the U.S. and abroad.
