Crispus Attucks, (1943)

On view at the Recorder of Deeds Building in Washington, D.C., Levit’s social-realist mural for the Works Project Administration (WPA) depicts the African-American Revolutionary War hero Crispus Attucks, a Boston laborer and runaway slave who became the first person killed in the 1770 Boston Massacre. Levit, a celebrated painter and printmaker, taught at Pratt for more than 30 years.
