The African Burial Ground Memorial honors the hundreds of slaves and other African-Americans who were found buried in unmarked graves on site, as well as the more than 20,000 enslaved Africans laid to rest in lower Manhattan in the 17th and 18th centuries. The New York Sun wrote: "It is a moving thing to see this site start to rivet and inspires visitors with a story that cannot be told too often or in too much detail or for too many generations." Leon's design was selected from 61 proposals in a national competition.
