Faculty Orientation – Registration

Hello, and welcome to Pratt! We hope that you will be able to join us for this year’s Faculty Orientation, which is scheduled for Thursday, August 24, from 8:30 AM–2:30 PM in the Pratt Library’s 2nd Floor Periodicals Room. We will welcome you with a light breakfast.

The first forty-five minutes will be dedicated to ensuring that you are ready to go—with an email address, access to all of our online services, and in our payroll system—by the first day of classes.

The remainder of the day’s programming will be devoted to discussions about how Pratt supports its faculty and its students, with  sessions on:

  • Supporting faculty in their teaching, with a focus on resources available and a workshop session on helping ALL students achieve the goals we set for them (bring a syllabus for one of your classes, so that you can think through—in specific terms—how you’ll gauge student success in achieving learning outcomes)
  • Supporting faculty in their creative work / research, with time to engage with Pratt’s newly hired Associate Provost for Research and Strategic Partnerships
  • Supporting student success, with a focus on the holistic support available to students in the form of academic and Student Life resources, the policies and processes that guide the work we all do, and the kinds of challenges that tend to come up in any given semester

This will also be a chance for you to learn about Pratt’s system of shared governance and how you can participate in it. Our goals are for you to leave this Orientation having completed key new hire processes that will let you function easily and effectively in the Pratt community, learned some key things about how Pratt works as well as the resources we have to support you, and energized by the prospect of participating in the Pratt community.

You will also have the opportunity to reserve a spot for one of the two the Learning Management System (LMS) workshops that will take place immediately following this event here in Brooklyn as well as several workshops in Manhattan on Tuesday, August 29. See below for details and to sign up.  You will also have the chance to sign up for one of Library tours that will give you good information about how you can work with Library staff—and take advantage of Library resources—in your teaching and in your own work.

For new faculty who are not able to attend the Brooklyn orientation, we will provide an opportunity—at Pratt Manhattan, on Tuesday, August 29 from 3–6 PM—for you to complete your new hire paper work there. Completion of this process will facilitate creation of your Pratt email address, access to online services and placement on Payroll. Please note that this will not be a repeat of the August 24 Orientation.
