International students and scholars are often surprised to learn that they have tax filing obligations while they are presently in the United States, even if they’ have never worked. If you were in the U.S. for even 1 single day during the tax year, you have tax filing obligations.
Filing the appropriate tax forms is a requirement of maintaining your status as an F-1 student. The deadline for filing most tax forms is April 15.
OIA will send out an email during the Spring semester with a reminder about your tax filing obligations. We will also bring in a tax expert for a workshop in the Spring semester.
Unfortunately, OIA staff cannot answer questions concerning individual tax situations as we are not licensed tax professionals. Students and scholars should consult the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS), local and state tax agencies, and tax professionals for advice and guidance regarding their individual situations.
For more details about your tax filing obligations and information about the spring tax workshop, please visit the Pratt Intranet page (requires Pratt OneKey to log in).
