There are two types of Optional Practical Training (OPT) that are possible options for you to pursue:
- Pre-Completion Optional Practical Training (Pre-Completion OPT)
- Post-Completion Optional Practical Training (Post-Completion OPT)
WHAT IS PRE-COMPLETION OPT?
Pre-Completion OPT is employment which is directly related to your major area of study before the completion of your studies. Post-Completion OPT is defined as employment which is directly related to your major area of study after completion of studies.
** Use of Pre-Completion OPT eligibility directly affects the amount of eligibility you have for Post-Completion OPT. According to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), “If you participated in pre-completion OPT, USCIS will deduct that amount of time from your post-completion OPT authorization period. For example, if you participated in 10 months of pre-completion OPT, you would be eligible for only up to 2 months of post-completion OPT.” (link).
WHAT IS POST-COMPLETION OPT?
Post-Completion OPT is defined as employment which is directly related to your major area of study after completion of studies.
HOW DO I APPLY FOR OPT?
OIA holds workshops each semester on the process of applying for OPT -- we highly recommend you attend one. Information about these workshops is emailed to enrolled international students each semester, listed on our Facebook page and available through flyers posted in the OIA office.
