When I retired as an editorial director for children’s books at HarperCollins, I began to appreciate picture books in a new way. Author-illustrator Steve Henry and I began working to develop a course for illustrators trying to find their voice in picture books.
My own interest in art is wide-ranging. Throughout my career, I worked with such great talents as Jim Arnosky, Pat Cummings, Susan Jeffers, Melanie Sweet–and, of course, Steve Henry. This class lets me share those experiences and favorites such as Mo Willems and Crockett Johnson. It leads me to discover new talents, including Tao Nyeu and Christian Robinson. I love exploring classics and popular new titles with our students.
