DETAILS

Join us for Pratt Institute’s annual Blue Week. To engage with environmental sustainability throughout the year, Blue Week stages a week-long, campus-wide series of events each fall to celebrate the life-giving force of water—fresh and salt, lake and ocean, on the coast and at sea. Blue Week shows respect for this element and the life forms implicated in its wake, including our own. As the pioneering oceanographer Sylvia Earle has said, “The single non-negotiable thing life requires is water.”

Programs encourage the Pratt community to experience water firsthand through the eyes of artists, planners, journalists, politicians, designers, and advocates. A reservoir and beach cleanup draws attention to the detrimental effects of consumer waste on the coastlines we share. This year, Pratt is offering water-inspired yoga and meditation classes. The role of cultural practice and design—film, photography, theatre—in water advocacy is a key component of this week. Rebecca Altman, Brad Lander, and Jennie Romer are experts who will engage in a panel discussion addressing marine plastic pollution.

Support from student environmental groups at Pratt—including LEAP (Leaders in Environmental Advocacy at Pratt) and EnVirolutions—shows how young people are working to imagine and design the common future of water.

Visit the Blue Week 2018 website for a calendar of events and more information.
