Pratt Institute Teacher Education Program

Our small program in Art and Design Education offers quality preparation in the content areas because it is located within Pratt’s highly rated professional schools of art, design, and library science. Students are well prepared for the classroom through their student-teaching placements with highly regarded cooperating teachers in New York City schools.

Please note: Pratt is now part of a new accrediting body, the Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation (AAQEP).

We were accredited by the Teacher Education Accreditation Council in October, 2014 for seven years. See Recent Accreditation Decisions.

Our Graduates are Well-Prepared to Teach

Our graduates report that they are well-prepared to work as art and design teachers and librarians. Upon completion of the program graduates say they were well-prepared to be caring professionals, to teach with sufficient pedagogical knowledge and instructional practice and to address issues of race, gender, ethnicity, culture, and disabilities. They also report having sufficient knowledge of students and student learning.

Note: For confidentiality, Title II pass rates are omitted if a teacher preparation provider had fewer than 10 test takers. Here, we aggregate all tests taken by completers to give a more accurate view of the overall quality of our teacher preparation programs.

Employment Milestones

Not all ADE graduates choose to stay in New York City or teach in the public schools. However, the 2018-2019 graduates who sought employment in New York City schools are all currently teaching.

Upon leaving the program completers of the Art and Design Education Program reported that the program prepared them very well or moderately well to begin teaching in the following areas:

  • Almost 90% report that they mastered the content area of art and design.
  • Over 80% report that their professors and mentoring teachers in the schools helped them develop their knowledge and skills as aspiring teachers.
  • Over 80% report that they are prepared to address the needs of English Language Learners and students with special needs.
  • Over 80% report that they are prepared to use different approaches to teaching and support performance assessment.
  • Over 70% report that they address the diverse cultural needs of learners and can maintain order and discipline in the classroom.
