Welcome to the Writing and Tutorial Center (WTC). As the Director, I'd like to briefly introduce you the services and procedures of our lab.
What are we?
The WTC is a multi-faceted writing lab that is available to all Pratt students on both a walk-in and scheduled basis. Our aim is to provide academic support for all Pratt students. We cater to all academic levels from Intensive English, through all undergraduates courses, to Master's Thesis preparation.
What do we offer?
We have individual and small group tutorials to improve writing skills. We also offer tutoring in Art History, Math, Physics, Statics, and Steel, and we run conversation groups for International students. At the Center we have Power Macs available for your word processing needs, and if you are not accustomed to doing your assignments on computers, we offer word processing tutoring. The on-line service you are using right now is our newest offering.
Statics
(individual and group)
Statics (for those of you who haven't taken it) is a course that teaches the physics of things that stand still; static. Our Statics tutor, Carl, works with students who are currently taking the Statics class as part of their architecture degree.
Physics
(individual and group)
Not surprisingly... our Statics tutor is also our Physics tutor! Just ask to make an appointment with Carl.
Thesis
(individual)
Thesis appointments are available for students working on their graduate thesis. These appointments are designed to help you THROUGHOUT the thesis generation and writing process and will only be given to students who are prepared to attend regularly. Thesis appointments will not be given on a one time only or walk in basis. If you intend to attend thesis tutoring, you must apply specifically for it, and you also must start tutoring before halfway through the semester. After that point, no new thesis students will be accepted. The thesis is a long, complicated piece of work which you must present in order to graduate. Attending thesis tutoring will help ensure your success!
Math
(individual and group)
Math tutoring with Carl is available to anyone attending Pratt math classes. Don't hesitate to come and work with him to help you successfully get through your math classes.
Written assignments for any Pratt classes
Although Pratt is an art school, you will have written assignments in classes other than English and Art History. Our English tutors are happy to work with you on your writing for ANY classes. So, feel free to drag in your Social Science papers, business proposals for marketing classes, project assessment reports, oh heck ANYTHING at all that requires structure, full sentences, and articulation of ideas through words rather than images. Although we may not be able to tutor you on the content of the courses, we can definitely work with you on the effectiveness of your papers. Come on down!
Art History
undergraduate and graduate (individual and group)
Dominica and Sarah, our resident Art History tutors, specialize in tutoring the Survey One and Two classes, as well as the Nineteenth and Twentieth Century classes. They are quite happy to work on written assignments or reading for any other art history courses as well. We have various other tutors who are also qualified to help you with Art History, so if they aren't available and this is the type of tutoring you need, make sure you inform us when you sign up for tutoring and we still may be able to accommodate you.
English Classes
undergraduate (individual)
Our tutors are ready, qualified and willing to help you work on your 101, 102, 103, and 105 assignments and English electives assignments. Although we are happy to work with you on your essays and reading comprehension, please do not expect tutors to have done all the reading for your classes! Remember to bring all materials (including original essay assignment sheets) to your sessions.
Intensive English
(individual and group)
If you are attending Intensive English classes at Pratt, we offer extra practice with reading, writing, and speaking skills. See also Conversation groups below.
Walk in tutoring
What happens if you don't have a weekly appointment, didn't know in advance that you needed help, or there wasn't an appointment slot available when you called? Try walking into the Writing and Tutorial Center and asking politely at the appointment desk. If there is a spare tutor available, he or she will be happy to work with you. Walk in tutoring really should only be attempted if truly desperate, and you must be aware that the Art History tutors' time is strictly limited, and it is unlikely you will be able to see them this way.
Please note: although we try to meet everyone's needs, we only have a certain amount of tutors and tutoring hours to go around, thus priority is given to weekly appointments. Please sign up for one immediately if you know you will be needing assistance. Don't hesitate!
One time only appointments
You may not require the regular assistance of a tutor, but you may encounter an assignment or course work which you do need help with. If this is the case, sign up for a one time only appointment. This consists of an hour with a tutor. Be clear what kind of assignment you will be working on when you make the appointment; this way the most suitable tutor can be chosen for you. Please be aware that one time only tutoring is only available if we have spots available in the tutoring schedule - it isn't always possible. Make your appointment as far in advance as possible. Also, please note that one time only tutoring is not designed for thesis students.
Weekly appointments
These are available to students who know they will need the regular assistance of a tutor. When you sign up for a weekly appointment, you are assigned to a specific tutor who you will meet with you for one hour each week. You are expected to attend each session throughout the semester (as if it was another class.) If you miss sessions you will lose your tutoring slot. You may use the session to work on class assignments and/or general skills according to the subject. Weekly appointment slots fill up quickly at the beginning of the semester. Be sure to sign up quickly!
