A WOMAN UNDER THE INFLUENCE

Directed by John Cassavetes
(1974, USA, 155 mins.)

From the legendary director of such influential improvisational films as SHADOWS, FACES, and HUSBANDS, A WOMAN UNDER THE INFLUENCE is a devastating drama that details the emotional breakdown of a suburban housewife and her family's struggle to save her from herself. Starring Peter Falk and Gena Rowlands as a married couple deeply in love yet unable to express that love in terms the other can understand, the film is an uncompromising portrait of domestic turmoil. Falk and Rowlands are astonishing in two of the most harrowing screen performances of the 1970s. A benchmark film of American independent cinema, A WOMAN UNDER THE INFLUENCE is a heroic document from a true maverick director.

The Pratt Film Society seeks to enrich the community by exploring various aspects of film and filmmaking while promoting interdisciplinary dialogue at Pratt through the art of film. The Pratt Film Society hosts free, weekly screenings, which include documentaries, fiction features, historical and contemporary releases, films by and about artists, and a forum for discussing all things film-related. To encourage an exchange of ideas there are program notes on hand at each screening and we invite noteworthy filmmakers to campus for question and answer. The Society also promotes local talent by screening works by students, staff and faculty, and alumni.
