National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week
Monday, Nov 25, 2013 @ 12:28 pm
November 16–24 was National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week. At Pratt several organizations have teamed up to promote awareness of hunger and homeless awareness issues:
On Friday, November 22, Community Engagement Board (C-Board) presented “To be without a home”- Discussion on Homelessness featuring guest speakers from Care for the Homeless NY sharing their personal experiences and perspectives.
Pratt partnered with Back on My Feet, a non-profit that uses running to help those experiencing homelessness change the way they see themselves so they can make real change in their lives that results in employment and independent living. Back on My Feet started in Philadelphia in 2007 and now has 11 chapters across the nation. Six of the residential members from the NYC chapter trained for and completed the NYC Marathon on November 3.
Last week was the Back on My Feet’s Sneaker Week campaign, and aimed to change the perception of homelessness. Students helped Pratt support Back on My Feet’s mission by donating. We are asking for donations ranging from $1–10. Supporters who donated $5–10 received a water bottle from Back on My Feet and were encouraged to wear sneakers to work.
To kick off sneaker week, there was a run on Tuesday, November 19 at 5:30 PM from Pratt to Ft. Greene Park and back (approximately 1.5 miles). Athletes from the Track and Basketball teams, students from in fraternities and sororities, as well as Back on My Feet staff, volunteers, and members participated in the run.
C-Board and Greek Life tabled in the Student Union at lunchtime (12:30–1:30 PM) throughout the week of November 18-22 to collect donations and provide information.
