Pratt Faculty member will lecture at University College London, Bartlett School of Architecture this Wednesday, Novermber 9.  He will speak about the longer view of computation.

the universe. Whether the interest is biological, sociological, or just plain formal, computation has been referred to more than once recently as a new promethean fire that will bring us unprecedented powers. No longer are we to live in a world of shadows now that we have a toolbox for manipulating what were once unknowable forces. You know of the recent exuberance when it comes to things like scripting and parametrics, for example, but aren't the implications further reaching than a new compositional technique? If it is true that nature's secrets are now being disclosed through the doorway of computation, is it time now to ask about creativity and imagination. You may be surprised-this time, it is not the romantic's version of the question. In other words, it is not about our imagination, but of nature's. In our time, what are we to make of the human being's creativity? Of nature's creativity? Is it still necessary to even distinguish? Do we really need to use the word ‘nature' anymore?
