The Jewelry Department at Pratt Institute is very pleased to host a lecture by Metalsmith, Writer and Craft Activist, Gabriel Craig. In 2007 he embarked on a project called “The Pro Bono Jeweler” a series of performances where he traveled to various cities with his jeweler’s bench and tools to make pieces in public. The main focus was to engage in dialogue with the public about “the cultural value of jewelry and craft”; while making a piece of jewelry, and then giving it away. Gabriel has also written for various art magazines including, American Craft, FiberArts and Metalsmith magazines. He keeps himself active as a jewelry artist exhibiting his work extensively and collaborating with different artists, like in the series Anachrony, shown on the right, where he collaborated with artist Amy Weiks . In 2008 he founded conceptualmetalsmithing.org a website that encourages the advance of contemporary metalsmithing theory, advocacy and critical writing. In 2011 he was invited to be part of The Ethical Jeweler Directory, which lists artists that have an ethical commitment to environmental responsibility in all processes of jewelry making.
