The New York Times Features Milli Vanilli Opera by Faculty Christian Hawkey
The New York Times previewed and reviewed a Milli Vanilli-inspired opera that was co-created by Humanities & Media Studies Professor and Poet Christian Hawkey. The musical, which is on now at BRIC House in Brooklyn through February 1, chronicles the tale of the pop vocal duo who left the industry in disgrace in 1990 after it was revealed that their live performances were lip-synced to recordings made by studio singers. Hawkey wrote a non-narrative libretto for the opera that draws from a diverse set of sources including 19th century vocal training manuals, the writings of Thomas Edison, and comments posted on YouTube and Milli Vanilli interviews. Hawkey teaches verse writing and poetics in the English Department and the Writing Program.
