Ralph Pucci Elected to Pratt’s Board of Trustees
Pratt Institute’s Board of Trustees has named Ralph Pucci as its newest member. Pucci’s appointment was effective October 11, 2013.
Ralph Pucci is president of Ralph Pucci International, a high-end mannequin, lighting, furniture, and sculpture company based in New York City and founded by his parents in the 1950s. The company operates in a spacious loft on West 18th Street where mannequins are designed, manufactured, and unveiled once yearly. The New York showroom showcases art, sculptures, photography, lighting, and furnishings by international artists and designers including Herve Van der Straeten, Patrick Naggar, Chris Lehrecke, Vladimir Kagan, Jens Risom, and Eric Schmit. In addition to the New York showroom, Pucci has a showroom at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood, California, and a showroom at the Wynwood Arts Center in Miami, Florida.
Pucci’s vision for the future of mannequins began when he created the Action mannequins, which broke from the traditional rigid form. He then reached out to fashion models such as Christy Turlington and created mannequins based on her for the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum. He later recreated Turlington’s face and body for a series of yoga poses.
Pucci has also collaborated with artists, designers, and illustrators including Andrée Putman, Kenny Scharf, Anna Sui, Maira Kalman, Stephen Sprouse, Veruschka, and Ruben Toledo.
This past fall, Ralph Pucci International partnered with the Institute on a semester-long project in which Pratt fashion design sophomores and juniors created garments, sculptures, and installations to complement Pucci mannequins from yarns generously donated by Lion Brand Yarns. The top 27 works from the partnership will be on display at Pucci’s Gallery Nine showroom from January 21 to 28, 2014, in the exhibition Organic Matter: Woven Artwear by Pratt Fashion. This collaboration follows on the successful 2010 partnership Pratt + Paper & Ralph Pucci, in which students were challenged to dress Pucci’s Spring 2011 GIRL 2 mannequins in fashion designs made entirely of paper. The results were presented in an exhibition at Pucci’s Gallery Nine showroom in December 2010, and in display windows of Macy’s flagship Herald Square store through January 26, 2011. That spring, select works from Pratt + Paper & Ralph Pucci were also exhibited at EuroShop, a global retail trade show in Dusseldorf, Germany, and at Cofrad Mannequins in France.
Pucci has received many awards. He was selected for the “Best in Furniture and Furnishing Design” by the Robb Report and the “Best Showroom” by Wallpaper. In 2009, he received the Markopoulos Award, the highest honor in the visual merchandising industry, and in 2012, Manhattan magazine chose Pucci as the “Best Furniture Gallery in New York.”
Pucci is the author of two books: Show (Glitterati Incorporated, 2009) and Wall (Glitterati Incorporated, 2011).
