Multiple Media Outlets Cover “Black Dress” Exhibition at Pratt Manhattan Gallery
Pratt Manhattan Gallery’s "Black Dress: Ten Contemporary Fashion Designers" received extensive media coverage around its February 6 opening from outlets including Style.com, NY1, W Magazine, and The New York Daily News. Co-curated by Pratt Fashion Department Professor Adrienne Jones, “Black Dress” is an unprecedented exhibition featuring work by 10 contemporary New York-based black fashion designers. Style.com previewed the exhibition and spoke with Jones about the exhibition's origins and significance in highlighting the work of established and up-and-coming black designers. “We wanted to show the huge span [of talent] that we have,” said Jones. NY1's coverage included a feature segment previewing "Black Dress," with tie-ins to both New York Fashion Week and Black History Month. Co-curator and Pratt Fashion Professor Adrienne Jones, Co-curator Paula Coleman, and "Black Dress" Exhibiting Designers LaQuan Smith and Byron Lars were included in the report. W Magazine’s "Black Dress" coverage highlights the importance of the exhibition, noting the inspiration Jones found in her godmother’s scrapbooks of black fashion, as well as her determination to educate others about the contributions of black designers. Exhibiting Designer Byron Lars is also quoted. The February 7 print edition of The New York Daily News featured “Black Dress” in their “In the Now!” section, hailing the show a “celebration” of Fashion Week and Black History Month. “I’m hoping it brings in awareness that we’ve been here all along and the presence that we’ve had in the industry since the beginning,” stated Jones on her aspirations for the first-of-it-kind exhibition. The piece also mentions an accompanying panel discussion to the exhibition that will be held on March 5 at Pratt's Manhattan campus.
